FOR WHOM THE BELLS TOLL
We continue to toll the bell at Nazareth at 3 p.m. on the day of a scheduled
execution signaling a call to prayer and remembrance. We also rejoice
in the fact that more than 100 people on death row have been acquitted
of allegations because of DNA testing. There continues to be a movement
in the country to declare a nationwide moratorium on the use of the death
penalty because of the number of acquittals due to DNA testing, and the
world-wide consideration of the death penalty as cruel and unusual punishment.

DETROIT EDISON
The Sisters of St. Joseph, Nazareth, have joined the IHM Sisters of Monroe
in their shareholder activity at Detroit Edison. Our work over the
past 4 years has been on the issue of global warming, specifically with
carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from their generating
facilities. We have been in dialogue with the management of the corporation
over this time line. Most recently we filed a shareholder resolution in
order to push the company to develop benchmarks for the reduction of (CO2)
emissions. They agreed so we withdrew the resolution. The report was shared
with us Fall 2005.
